Getting To Know Bishop Brandon Stanford

Posted: Sunday - August 6, 2023

Last but not least, we're going to learn more about our newest bishop, Bishop Brandon Stanford of the Burlington Ward.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

I was eleven years old and bored in Sacrament Meeting. So I read the Joseph Smith account and it changed my life. I have never doubted after that. That doesn't mean my testimony is complete. For instance, I have worked for years to develop a greater testimony of the Savior, the Living Christ. And even though I have felt the healing of repentance in my life I wanted to strengthen my faith of Him specifically - and it's taken some time. But this last year it's become more complete and I can feel the Spirit confirming that He truly lives. The scripture states "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” Testimonies take time, and won't always feel complete. Don't worry. Don't give up. Just keep at it. I'm glad I do.

How did you meet your wife?

We were in line for BBQ at a Single Adults Conference in D.C. Courtney was bundled up in a peacoat, with just her cute face sticking out. When her friends went to get in a shorter line, I followed too. The line didn't move any faster but that ended up being great for us. The next day she saw me at church and invited me to sit with her. We just click and I love her so much.

What General Conference talk has been on your mind lately and why?

The Book of Mormon—Keystone of Our Religion, by President Ezra Taft Benson

It's not enough just to study the scriptures: it needs to be the Book of Mormon. And it needs to be daily. I've gotten to a point where I can tell the difference when I haven't read. So I keep a paper copy in my desk and read at least a few verses every day. It doesn't take much to feel the difference.

What is your go-to ice cream flavor and why?

I can't just choose one. It's dictated by mood. But my go-to's are pistachio gelato, butter pecan, and strawberry cheesecake. I would not recommend eating them all together.

Tell us about your family.

I have the best mother-in-law. She was the best wingman ever while me and my now wife were figuring things out. In return, Courtney married into all of my siblings. And she fits right in. They love her and I couldn't be happier.

Where else have you lived and how long have you lived in North Carolina?

I was born and raised in San Marino, CA, Los Angeles County. I went to BYU for college, served a mission in the south of Chile, and moved back to California where I had a fantastic apartment by the ocean. I had been on vacation in NC before and couldn't get over the urge to move here. I didn't realize my future wife was quietly living here in her home state. Best move ever.
