Getting To Know Bishop Brandon Stanford

Posted: Sunday - August 6, 2023

Last but not least, we're going to learn more about our newest bishop, Bishop Brandon Stanford of the Burlington Ward.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

I was eleven years old and bored in Sacrament Meeting. So I read the Joseph Smith account and it changed my life. I have never doubted after that. That doesn't mean my testimony is complete. For instance, I have worked for years to develop a greater testimony of the Savior, the Living Christ. And even though I have felt the healing of repentance in my life I wanted to strengthen my faith of Him specifically - and it's taken some time. But this last year it's become more complete and I can feel the Spirit confirming that He truly lives. The scripture states "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” Testimonies take time, and won't always feel complete. Don't worry. Don't give up. Just keep at it. I'm glad I do.

Getting To Know President Gabe San Martin

Posted: Sunday - August 6, 2023

Today we're going to meet a fairly new member of our stake, and the branch president of the Piedmont Branch, President Gabe San Martin. We're grateful his family moved here!

How did you find Jesus in your life?

I can't remember a time of my life when I didn't believe in the existence of God and Jesus Christ. Growing up, my family and I attended many different churches, until we found the missionaries in the winter of 2004. We had just moved from Chile to New York City for a second time. The lesson on the plan of salvation had a big impact on me. It answered some of the questions that up to that point in my life, I had no answers to. I was baptized in March of 2005 at the age of 16. I was baptized knowing that what I was learning was what had made the most sense to me up to that point. I knew the Church and what it represented was good. My testimony of the Book of Mormon and all the other knowledge and certainty that comes with it didn't come to me until about a year later. It came to me one night as I was reading the Book of Mormon before going to bed. From that moment on, I have known that this is the Church of Jesus Christ restored through the prophet Joseph Smith. That knowledge changed things for me, soon thereafter I found a true desire to serve a mission. I served in the Pocatello Idaho Mission and the deepening of my testimony during that time has served as the foundation for the rest of my life.

Posted: Sunday - August 6, 2023

Today we're learning more about Bishop Danny Ouzts from the Caswell Ward! I love how he met his wife.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

I had great leaders growing up in the church. Perhaps the best leader that I had growing up in the church was my grandmother. Her love of the gospel and her testimony of our Savior still echoes in my mind. When I was 14, my grandmother took our seminary class to the Hill Cumorah Pageant in Palmyra, NY. While there I heard her bear testimony to people on the side of the streets as we were entering the pageant that night. It is there I first remember feeling the power of the Holy Ghost. The spirit confirmed that what she was saying was true and I treasure that moment.

Getting To Know President Andy Lindsay

Posted: Sunday - August 6, 2023

I'm glad you're enjoying the spotlights on our stake and ward leadership! Here's President Andy Lindsay of the Young Single Adult Branch.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

My parents were introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the New York World’s Fair, and later accepted an invitation from the missionaries that eventually led to their baptisms when I was about a year old. So while I was raised in the Church, in many ways I was learning the gospel along with my parents.

I was blessed to have always had, to my recollection, a testimony of the truthfulness of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and determined at a very early age that I wanted to serve a mission for the Lord. At four or five years of age, I had a little zipper wallet with a horse and a cowboy on it, and I would collect pictures of the full-time elders and sisters (who were frequently in our home because my father was a stake missionary) and kept them in my wallet. I would happily show them to total strangers in the grocery store and explain to them that I was going to be a missionary when I grew up.

Getting To Know Bishop Chris Harris

Posted: Sunday - August 6, 2023

Today we’re learning more about Bishop Chris Harris from the Gibsonville Ward.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

I grew up as a member of the Church, but I believe I found Jesus in my life as I gained experience in life and wanted to better understand how I could find purpose in the decisions that I made and in the actions I would take. I always felt life must have purpose and that there would be some choices that could have real meaning behind them. As I learned more about the teachings of Jesus I recognized that I wanted, in my imperfect ways, to pattern my life more after His example. I have found great satisfaction in my own life as I continue to try and change in positive ways to better reflect His teachings.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

I found Him through the testimony of parents and leaders when I was young. I found Him further through making covenants, such as baptism and my endowment. More importantly I continue to find Him through daily scripture study and prayer and by looking daily for His hand and influence in my life. From the simple to grand, he is literally in everything.

Today we're going to get to know Bishop Ed Ott of the Danville Ward. I'm really enjoying getting to know all of these men!

How did you find Jesus in your life?

My mom was raised in the church but left and returned a number of times. I remember visiting other churches in my early childhood but I was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During high school, my circle of friends were of various religions so I took the opportunity to look into each one. Ultimately, I felt the peace in our church and appreciated the Book of Mormon even more, so at the age of 17 I chose to put all my eggs in one basket, so to speak. Serving a mission in Los Angeles only solidified my faith. Every year I can look back and see evidence of the truth in this religion.

Getting To Know Bishop Ben Stay

Posted: Sunday - August 6, 2023

Let's meet Ben Stay, the first bishop of the newly formed Lake Brandt Ward.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

I grew up a member of the church with family lines back to Orson Pratt and Heber C. Kimball. However, there came a point later in high school and my freshman year of college where I began to strongly question my testimony. I began sincerely reading the Book of Mormon and praying. First I prayed to know if Heavenly Father was there and received confirmation that He was, and He knew what was best for me. Then I prayed and received a witness that Jesus Christ is my Savior. Then I prayed about Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I didn't get that answer right away. After a few weeks, I realized I needed to be ready to receive the answer. Since I knew Heavenly Father knew what was best for me, I needed to be ready to go ALL IN following Jesus Christ and His church. Once I felt I was ready for whatever answer, I received this answer, "You always knew that Jesus was in this church!" From the testimony meetings at youth conference, to the fireside chats with friends and leaders, to the service projects, and many other experiences that came to mind, I had felt the Holy Ghost and knew that Jesus Christ was leading this church, and I would be the most happy by giving my heart and soul to this path of discipleship.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

I was raised in the church and feel like I have always had a testimony of the Savior. This began to grow significantly in middle school and high school as I began attending seminary and studying the gospel on my own. It was further strengthened on my mission in Latvia. The church and the Savior have always been major parts of my life, and I love to talk about the church with just about anyone.

Getting To Know Bishop Kelly Tucker

Posted: Sunday - August 6, 2023

Today we'll get to know Kelly Tucker, the bishop of Summit Ward.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

When my mom was in college, one of her roommates was engaged to marry a "good Mormon boy" so they went to the library to research Mormons. When I was eight years old, my mom started working at a monogram shop in High Point. The owner, Bill Harvel, was a member of the church who gave my mom a Book of Mormon. She chose to be baptized. My dad said that she could do that but that he and the boys would continue to attend the Methodist church. Three years pass in which my mother faithfully attended the church and we attended the Methodist church. My father would take us to Stake Conference on occasion. We attended the dedication of the stake center by Elder LeGrand Richards.

After one stake conference, my dad invited the Harvels to come to our house for dinner. My grandfather raised beef cows so we always had great steaks and my dad was pretty good at cooking them. After the meal, the doorbell rang. My mom answered the door. It was the missionaries. You need to understand that at the time, there were very few houses in our general area. My mom said, "Elders, what can we do for you?" They answered "We were told that someone here wanted to have the discussions." Perplexed, she said "You must have the wrong address." About that time, my dad comes up behind her and says "Come on in elders". My mom about passed out! We had the discussions and my dad, brother, and I were baptized several weeks later.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

I grew up inside the church, with faithful parents. My mother was in the Tabernacle Choir when I was young and I remember going to the Tabernacle one Sunday to listen to Music and the Spoken Word, the Choir’s weekly broadcast, and I remembered something my mother had told me about how missionary work gets done in multiple ways, including bearing testimony through song. That day I felt the Spirit confirm so strongly the truthfulness of the gospel.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

My testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ is founded primarily on the feelings that I have experienced as I have read the Book of Mormon. As a child, I had the wonderful opportunity to read the Book of Mormon with my family daily. My parents made the scriptures come to life for my young mind. As I got older and began a personal, serious study of the Book of Mormon, I could not deny the peace, insight, and strength that came into my life as I focused on the doctrine of Christ taught therein.

We're starting with stake president, James D. Carlson. He's answered some questions for us.

How did you find Jesus in your life?

When I turned 12 my father took me to the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City to attend the General Priesthood session. I remember sitting on the wooden benches with my view of the pulpit partially blocked by a column. I will never forget when President Spencer W. Kimball stood and started to speak in his raspy but sweet voice. From the top of my head to the soles of my feet, I was filled with the Holy Ghost testifying to me. It was a feeling so strong and powerful that I will never forget. I knew I was in the presence of a living prophet. Prior to this experience my testimony of Jesus Christ had been nurtured but it was impressed upon me individually at this moment and I felt Jesus knew me and I was a son of God.
